Work with? Guide at Fag Flis Arkitektshowroom

I believe a home should tell a story about the people who live there and at the same time enhance the personality of the building. If you use every square meter available, dare to play with details and mix them with colours and style expressions you like, then magic happens!

Who is Pernille?

I am an outgoing person, a hybrid between an urban city lover and an outdoor fan. I feel good on the cobblestones in Oslo, but I’m not foreign to pack a backpack and travel to the mountains. The colours and light of nature are a constant source of inspiration to me. I am a professional pedagogue specializing in communication and visual arts. Colour is a base in my life. I have mixed lots of colours in art school, in the roll as a teacher and on the walls at home. In recent years I have worked as a freelancing colour consultant before I, a short while ago, started at Fag Flis Arkitektshowroom where I enjoy colourful tiles. Also, in recent years, me and my partner have renovated two apartments together, and it’s during this journey my big interest for interior decorating and design has been maximized. My partner is a skilled carpenter and I love to dig in and get grubby, in that combination many exciting things happen. It is also important for me to feel comfortable and enjoy myself – good food, long breakfasts or a glass of wine while listening to vinyl records. I love these lovely little moments you can fill your everyday life with.

Which is the most momentous tangible you own – tell us its history and why it’s so special?

-

I have several! On top of the list is my grey safari chair from Norell. We searched, longed and saved for a long time for the right chair. When we eventually found this one in a small niche store, it came home with us straight away. I also have a couple of jars, brass candlesticks and candle holders which I inherited from my mother and grandmother that have a very special place in my heart. Finally, perhaps our paintings. They have something in common and that is that they are made by someone, bought during a trip or an event and therefore have their own little story tied to them.

-

What is and does interior decorating mean to you?

-

To me interior decorating is a way of expressing myself creatively. When I work with interior decorating my perspective of time disappears. I believe a home should tell a story about the people who live there and at the same time enhance the personality of the building. If you use every square meter available, dare to play with details and mix them with colours and style expressions you like, then magic happens! I love decorating where people dare to show who they are, and which works with the surroundings.

-

Which is your favourite room at home – and why?

-

A difficult question as the rooms are so different. Perhaps the kitchen as you can see the various colours in the whole apartment from there, and not least the niche covered in veneer. From the kitchen you can also choose if you want to look out over the lake or towards Ekebergsåsen. But it’s also great to start the day in the forest-green bedroom or curl up on the couch in the terracotta-red living room. I believe my favourite room varies depending on my mood and the time of day.

Our tradition is to dress the Christmas tree on “Little Christmas Eve”, we have so much fun every time we bring out the old Christmas decorations again.

How do you create a playful Christmas feeling at home? We’d love some tips!

I try to use things, materials and colours which give me a Christmas feeling. It can be anything from brass candlesticks to nuts and inherited Christmas decorations. I think a playful and exciting feeling emerges if you mix old and new. Blend some old Christmas decorations and odd santas from your childhood and mix them with newly found favourites.

What’s the most important about Christmas you think?

To be together with your love ones, perhaps especially in the morning of Christmas Eve. We enjoy cookies and coffee in our pyjamas while watching “Cinderella’s three wishes” – a classic.

-

Which Christmas decoration cannot be found at your place?

-

A plastic Christmas tree which is already styled and everything is matched.

-

Which is the most playful Christmas decoration we can find in your home?

-

All homemade decorations my siblings and I did when we were kids. Santas in all sizes and shapes and cone angels with cotton hair now tilted after many years on the Christmas tree. Our tradition is to dress the Christmas tree on “Little Christmas Eve”, we have so much fun every time we bring out the old Christmas decorations again.

-

Is there any achievement in life you are extra proud of?

-

Last autumn our apartment appeared in one of the biggest interior decorating magazines in Scandinavia, BoBedre. That has been a personal goal and it was fantastic to be recognized for all the work we have invested in creating our home.

-

Colour, shape and finish – what are your thoughts about this when you decorate?

-

I try to visualize the apartment and the changes I want to make. Then I ask myself some questions: how will it effect the overall impression? How does that communicate with the other elements in the room? Which effect do I want with this change? Colour, shape and finish should together awake the curiosity, but it’s also easy to make a room feel over decorated with too many things. Colour, shape and finish matter a lot when it comes to big and small things and the combination of them is usually what makes me fall head over heels.
