There are interior rules that say you shouldn’t mix patterns – Nonsense, we say!

Even though checks and stripes have been part of our collection for a long time, they continue to be an inspiring and playful element in our interiors. When we interpret patterns, we embrace the messy and mischievous – and the more you combine, the better. At least, that’s how we see it.

Both checks and stripes are traditionally strong patterns seen in many contexts. In Byon’s autumn collection, we’re going all in on maximising the pattern mix – the more patterns together, the better! And preferably in different materials and colours for extra impact.

There are interior design rules claiming you shouldn’t mix patterns – but of course, we say nonsense! This autumn and winter, when we set the table and decorate, we love layering checks on checks, stripes on stripes – or why not combine checks, stripes, and other patterns all at once? It creates depth, dynamism, and playfulness – and most importantly, it brings a smile to your face.

How to decorate with checks and stripes

1. Checks on Checks

We love layering similar patterns, like checks on checks on checks, to create extra impact. By using the same colour across all patterns and weaving in a few vibrant accents, you’ll achieve an eye-catching table setting. Here, we’ve used a pepper-red contrast against black and checks, but any standout colour works beautifully in a pattern-on-pattern mix.

2. Combine materials, patterns & colours

Contrast is key in interior design. Use checks or stripes in different materials and pair them together. We love mixing patterns – checks, dots, or stripes – layering them over a neutral base and adding a bit of "extra everything" on top. To avoid it feeling too chaotic, pick up the base colours in your tableware details. But since "extra everything" is our motto, go for it! Products you love will always create a personal pattern story when combined.

3. Different stripes, different vibes

Stripes running lengthwise, stripes running across. Organic or straight. Soft or sharp. Together, the stripes create a sense of playfulness. Mix the colours boldly or stick to two tones – but don’t be afraid to combine them upright, sideways or on the diagonal.

4. Start small

Textiles and porcelain are an easy way to introduce patterns into your decor. Start with fabric napkins in various colours and top it off with a statement plate. Swap your plain tablecloth for checks or stripes and mix in bowls and platters you already own. Simple yet so effective for your table setting!
